For travellers who enjoy looking closely, the wetlands offer another way to experience the natural richness of Sri Lanka’s north-west.
A wetland of international importance
Anawilundawa, also recorded as Annaiwilundawa Tanks Sanctuary, is a Ramsar wetland site. Its protected wetland character makes it a worthwhile destination for visitors interested in birds and habitats beyond a jeep safari.
Leave room to observe
Bring binoculars and take a patient approach. Stop quietly, scan the water and vegetation, and let a local guide help identify what is present on the day. A successful visit need not depend on seeing a particular species.
Plan a separate excursion
This is a longer regional outing south of the Wilpattu area, not an attraction immediately beside the resort. Ask about the current route, access and guide arrangements before committing to a day. It may also suit a stop on an onward journey, depending on your itinerary.
